Hannibal's house, Sunday

So, Hannibal had half as many children himself this weekend as he had last time, but that hadn't made it any less hectic or full of cooking. And he wouldn't even pretend that he minded. At least this time he had his own kitchen.

So, he was up early again today, getting started on breakfast for the crowd. He was one carafe of coffee and a set of recipe cards into it when Angela stumbled down, yawning, and grinned at him. "I thought I could sous-chef again, if you like." She kissed his cheek.

Hannibal smiled back. "That would be lovely; thank you. What do you think?" He fanned the recipe cards out for her to see.

"I like it," she decided. "I'll start cutting."

Breakfast menu:
Crepes with honeyed oranges
Apple, brie, and prosciutto crepes
Crepes with pears, gouda, and fresh thyme
Leek, apple, fennel sausage, and goat cheese crepes
Peanut butter and jam crepes (Shush, there were bound to be young ones around.)
Maple-espresso bacon
Blood pudding
Creamy French scrambled eggs
Pancetta and gruyere strata
Fresh orange juice
Organic milk
An assortment of teas
As much coffee as Hannibal can possibly brew

JJ dragged himself up to the kitchen, following the smell of the bacon.

"G'Morning," he mumbled as he stretched.

"Good morning, JJ." Hannibal smiled and nodded at him. "Coffee?"

"We've got plenty of cream and sugar, even if you drink it like your mom!" Angela teased from her place at the counter.

"No one should drink coffee like mom," JJ shuddered. "But I think I'll just stick with OJ, if there is any? I can still taste the stuff they call coffee at the bakery yesterday."

He leaned over to look. "Whatcha making?"

"OJ it is." Angela went to get that for him. "Crepes," she answered, "lots of them! And bacon and eggs and blood pudding."

"Mmmm sounds delicious!" JJ approved. "Except for the blood pudding, of course. I still don't get why people eat that."

"Because it's delicious," Angela said. She passed him a glass of orange juice and went back to slicing things. "Dad never taught you a proper appreciation for British food?"

"Of course. Well, as much as you can for British food." He leaned against the counter, sipping his juice and trying to steal a slice from her finished pile. "But that doesn't mean I like all of it. Give me the rest of a Full Fry Up (http://www.seriouseats.com/2012/08/guide-to-a-fry-up-full-british-breakfast-what-is-in-ingredients.html), even a Bubble and Squeak (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bubble_and_squeak), and I am all in."

"You steal one more apple and I'll have you in these crepes!" Angela threatened, feinting at his fingers with the knife.

She just ignored Father's intense amusement from the other side of the kitchen.

JJ bounced up to kiss her cheek, making the biggest puppy eyes he could. "But you slice the best apples, sis! And I'm huuuungry."

"In that case," Hannibal interjected, "you can slice the pears." He set one down in front of JJ, then slid a cutting board over. "The faster they're done, the sooner we'll eat. And you can steal some of your own cutting, since human isn't on the menu this morning."

They had guests! And Jono would kill him if he tried it.

When Father went back to his own cooking, Angela stuck her tongue out at JJ. "Knives are right there." She pointed.

"Man, you are so mean. Making a guest and your baby brother work for his breakfast." He reached for the knife and a pear, then stopped and grinned up at her.

Peanut butter on tacos had sounded good!

He set the knife very unprofessionally over the pear and began making what to him were verrrry careful slices. He was even biting his tongue, he was trying so hard. But, as the jagged chunks and slivers proved, there was a reason JJ had his own account at the local take-out place for when his parents were gone.

Angela winced. "Oh, bloody hell," she muttered, just glad Father wasn't looking. "Never mind, I'll cut. Go...make tea! You can make tea, right?"

"Tea I can do." JJ snickered and set down the knife, moving towards the tea kettle. "I don't mean to do it, you know. It's like a curse or something. Even Mom can make some things. It all just comes apart when I try. Like using the wrong formula in math or something."

He began filling the kettle. "What leaf should I make?"

"English breakfast?" Angela suggested. "Most everybody likes that."

"Black it is." He set the kettle to boil and waited. "So you got all the cooking genes, then?"

"Oh, I'm nowhere near in Father's class!" Angela protested. "But I can sous-chef just fine - chopping, mixing, following directions. Father says it's good bonding time. Dad says he doesn't care so long as he gets to eat it." And it wasn't human.

"Still. Bet you didn't get an engraved can opener for Christmas!" He grinned over at her. "It is a good bonding time, though. Even when I was little I was dragging the kitchen stool over to the stove so I could help Da' with dinner. I still hang out in the kitchen a lot. We all do."

"They didn't!" Angela cracked up. "Who gave you that?"

"Totally did." He gave her a V sign. "They'd gone on a trip somewhere that year and I spent the whole weekend eating nothing but cold leftovers, Doritos, and pop tarts. By the time they got back I had such a stomach ache..."

"Mom teased me about it and then got it for me. It says 'To open in case of emergency. Love Mom'."

"JJ, you're terrible!" Angela declared. "There is always takeaway, you know."

"That's for people who don't spend their money on video games." JJ snorted as he removed the water from the stove. "But don't worry. Mom set up an account for me at a local place. The can opener was a family joke; I also got a laser tag set that year."

"Do you eat out a lot? Or does your Da do most of the family cooking?" Angela asked, curious.

"Da' cooks mostly. Mom can cook some things, but not a lot. Da' says he can only eat so much rice without curry before he has to explode." JJ shrugged and set about pouring some water over the tea and into the pot. "But yeah. They're both big on family meals, even if it's take-out or restaurants."

"Unless they're on an assignment, we usually eat together. I guess you do too?"

"Almost always," Angela agreed. "But then, you see what my Father's like." She grinned over her shoulder at Hannibal and gestured to take in the whole kitchen. "So your Da's put himself back together, too?"
