Thanksgiving Dinner

With as much prep done as possible the day before, Hannibal...was still up plenty early, due to both inclination and all the food still left to cook. He believed in doing everything right, and he also believed that the host should not spend their entire party in the kitchen.

So, with Sparkle's help, by early afternoon everything was done and being kept warm or cold, only the final just-before-plating flourishes left, and he was relaxing with a nice glass of mulled wine, ready for the guests.

Éponine was trying her best not to visibly sniff at the air; Cosette was totally side-eyeing this entire conversation.

"That may not be too hard, monsieur, seeing as I always appreciate a good meal," she said in a bright tone. "And good lord, doesn't this one look like it's going to be pretty! I'd tip my cap to you, if I had one, but I don't of course since it wouldn't be proper at these sorts of goings-on."

So she raised her glass of wine to him instead.

"I will take it as read, then." Hannibal toasted her back. "And fortunately, I adore feeding people." He handed Cosette her eggnog with a little bow. "Hence my classes."

Cosette -- who had not thought to consider that the eggnog might be alcoholic but wouldn't object to it -- took the drink with a touch too much eagerness. "Thank you kindly, monsieur," she said with a little nod of acknowledgment. To Éponine she added, "Yes, I've enjoyed all his classes so far. I've learned so much, and they have been challenging."

She stopped talking long enough to take a sip of the eggnog, and made a wordless noise of surprise. "Somehow that wasn't at all what I expected, but I like it."

Hannibal nodded and smiled at her. "Thank you. And please, both of you - enjoy the food as well."

Cosette meant to take one quick sip of eggnog before she replied, but one turned into three, and then four, and then an abashed expression on her face when she said, "Oh, I'm sure we will." Let Éponine get frowny about Cosette daring to speak for her, but with food like this, really, how could anyone not?
