Hannibal and Jono's house, Christmas

Hannibal and Jono had returned from their honeymoon in time for Christmas Eve, but where most people might have taken a few days to relax, Hannibal was taking the opportunity to cook.

Sparkle had been invited, along with their collective students, and they'd asked that word be passed to anyone who might still be on the island and needing or wanting to spend the holiday with others.

There were eggnog, coffee, lamb, quail, copious roasted vegetables, and desserts in the oven. The fireplaces were lit, and the smells of pine, spices, and roasting meats were everywhere.

Christmas was ready!

//Anyway, the more the merrier. And Hannibal really doesn't bother with potlucks or anything of the sort, so flowers are the perfect offering for the occasion.//

"Good thing." Peter snorted. "Before I got here, I hadn't seen a kitchen in a thousand years, and I haven't eaten in fifteen hundred. Doesn't really make for the best cooking."

//Not eating has a funny way of doing that,// Jono agreed, only slightly bemused at the timeframe Peter was talking about, here. //I think we're at about half and half now, for people attending this dinner who do eat versus ones who don't.//

"I...sort of wondered if you did," Peter confessed. "Didn't seem polite to ask. Or that it was any of my business." Just so long as he wasn't hurting anyone to do it.

Jono gave his shoulders a shrug at that.

//Hard to eat without a mouth,// he pointed out. //Though more people ask than not. You'd hardly be a first if you did. I'm used to the questions by now. It's almost stranger when people don't ask them.//

Which wasn't really an invitation, either. Jono was contrary like that.

"You don't have a mouth where it's expected." Peter gave a rueful shrug. "I've known a lot of..." demons "...lifeforms?"

Some of them had mouths in really strange places. Or ate without them.

Jono's eyebrows raised up just slightly. He was torn between giving Peter a hard time about the 'lifeform' comment, or sharing that he had met a number of people with mouths in their hands.

They'd been trying to eat him.

//You say that like I'm some sort of mutant,// he said instead, because the snark was strong with this one and Jono would forever be such a little shit. //Honestly now, Peter.//

Peter gave a somewhat sheepish shrug. "Well, you're not a regular human."

//Nah,// Jono agreed. //I am a mutant. Actual word we use back home and everything. But I can tell you with some certainty I don't have any spare mouths hidden out of sight.//

So there was little point in speculating.

"Um. Okay. So, we can not eat together, then?"

//Works for me, mate,// Jono replied, vaguely amused. //We can sit on the not-eating corner of the room while Hannibal and Sparkle have their fill.//

"It seems a shame we're missing out on all this food. It looks great. But..." He shrugged.

"What do not-eating folks do on Christmas around here, then? Carols, storytelling, listen to the radio, watch TV...?"

//... That's actually an excellent question,// Jono admitted. //I'm not much for carols, either. But I suppose I could scrape together a story or two, if we wanted to actually do something.//

"Ghost stories used to be traditional," Peter offered.

[furnaceface]

//I... might know a few ghost stories,// Jono hedged. //Most of them are more strange than frightening, though.//

Peter snorted. "I can do without frightening anyway. It's that or charades. Or I guess we've got four for Bridge."

Hey, his pop culture spanned a lot of centuries!

It was an impressive sampling, at that!

//I'm shite at Bridge and even worse at charades,// Jono shared, shaking his head. //Or, rather, it'd be hard to resist the urge to point out that since I don't speak aloud, telling people my answer absolutely isn't cheating.//

And he'd dare anybody to prove he was speaking one-on-one to his partner, at that.

Peter laughed. "And illusions and shapeshifting totally aren't talking aloud either." He thought about it. "A lot of games must be more interesting around here."
