Invitations had gone out ~~handwavily~~ on the school and town's bulletin boards, both electronic and physical, that a belated post-pollen relaxation and last-day-of-break dinner party was being held at Hannibal's house and everybody was invited.

Of course, that meant Hannibal had had to come home and go immediately into a frenzy of cooking and preparing, but honestly - you relax your way, and he'd relax his.

Lucille didn't want this question to sound as if she was suspicious, but when the thought had first appeared it had made her uneasy. "Mr Starmore, can he... can he hear only what I want him to? I don't mean to be rude or to imply that I don't trust him but... thoughts are things we don't always control."

Hannibal smiled. "Never fear; Jono understands that quite well. He could, if he tried, hear whatever he liked, but his code of ethics prevents him from doing so. He takes quite a bit of care to block out everybody else's thoughts, and will only listen to those directed at him."

That was good. Or was it? It meant that she needed to trust Mr Starmore, and while he had given her no particular reason not to, Lucille was by nature suspicious. Had he listened, she told herself, he would surely not be as kind.

"He's very polite and discreet," Hannibal assured her. "And he's used to people being uncertain about that. So long as you don't judge him preemptively."
