What his CV says:

Dr. Hannibal Lecter is a respected psychiatrist and former surgeon. He received his medical degree from Paris Descartes University and completed an internship and residency at Johns Hopkins, where he specialized in emergency medicine.

Dr. Lecter currently runs a private psychiatric practice in Baltimore and consults with the FBI's Behavioral Science Unit on criminal profiles. He has conducted studies in and written noted papers on social exclusion.

He is coming to Fandom with the hope of finding a challenge and passing on his love of knowledge to many young minds. He hopes he may learn as much from his students as they will from him.

In addition to his professional qualifications, he is also an accomplished chef with a passion for food, an artist whose anatomic illustrations have been used in standard medical texts, and a founding contributor to Lyric Opera Baltimore.

What his friends, coworkers, and colleagues would tell you:

Hannibal Lecter is a remarkably intelligent and cultured man. He was one of the youngest people ever admitted to medical school in France, has mentored a number of other prominent doctors and psychiatrists, and was a popular professor at Johns Hopkins (he may have expected a hell of a lot, but the end-of-semester dinner party was not to be missed).

Dr. Lecter left behind surgery after seeing one too many patients die; though he generally doesn't think much of many psychiatrists and psychologists, he finds the possibilities of psychiatry exhilarating and enjoys helping people. He has few good friends himself, but many acquaintances, and his dinner parties are still not to be missed!

He is good at thinking outside the box, infallibly polite and well-mannered, and there doesn't seem to be anything he puts his mind to - from brewing his own beer to playing the harpsichord - that he can't become good at. Food and the mind are his passions, but he's a patron of any number of other arts. He's refined and unflappable, with a dry sense of humor. He also dresses well and can be a bit fastidious.

His sketches are amazing; he says it's because he gets a better pencil point with a scalpel. Hey, the man has a few quirks; who doesn't? He's also not shy about smelling people - he has an amazing sense of smell (as in, he can smell cancer and encephalitis and make out the individual notes of perfumes).

He hates bullies and can get quite protective of people he thinks need it, especially children. He's fairly strong and keeps himself in good shape.

What nobody knows:

Oh, yeah: he's a cannibalistic serial killer. Those dinner parties? He gets a kick out of feeding people to his friends without their knowledge. Occasionally people they know. He enjoys killing, and equally enjoys turning murder scenes into artistic installations. He mostly kills the rude - he really detests rude people.

He's more than a little narcissistic; as far as he's concerned, most people don't warrant his time. And he definitely expects respect; see above, re: his feelings on rudeness.

He gets real enjoyment out of seeing the impact his work has - it's good to know his artistry is having its desired effect, satisfying to see how completely he's outsmarted everyone, and an adrenaline rush to see how much of himself he can show, how close he can bring everyone, and still keep anyone from finding him out.

The canon:

The TV show Hannibal is based off bits of the novels of Thomas Harris (Red Dragon, Silence of the Lambs, Hannibal, and Hannibal Rising) and set before Red Dragon. It follows Will Graham (Hugh Dancy), a profiler for the FBI, and Hannibal (Mads Mikkelsen), his friend/psychiatrist.

Will is a former homicide detective; he was a bit too unstable to actually be an FBI agent, so he teaches at the academy. He has an overdeveloped imagination and sense of empathy that make it easy for him to step into the roles of the killers he's after, discovering motives and actions and uncovering evidence in a way no-one else can. He also sleepwalks, hallucinates, loses time, and is "closer to Asperger's and autistics" than the other end of the spectrum.

As the series begins, the Behavioral Science Unit is trying to catch a serial killer and having no luck, so boss Jack Crawford (Laurence Fishburne) recruits Will. He wants to "borrow his imagination" in order to learn more about the killer. He knows Will is uncomfortable socially and overidentifies with killers sometimes, but he's a brilliant profiler. To try to keep Will on an even keel, Jack calls in Dr. Hannibal Lecter.

Despite a bit of initial animosity from Will ("Don't psychoanalyze me. You won't like me when I'm psychoanalyzed.") Hannibal is there for him, to both evaluate his continued suitability for field work and to help him deal with his empathy and keep his sanity. He becomes Will's friend, doing everything from bringing him breakfast to feeding his dogs when he's out. He also often plays sounding board, helping Will get his thoughts in order so he can solve a case.

Over the course of the series, Will uses his empathy and skills to help bring down a number of serial killers. He's also ended up killing two of them, and having to deal with how that makes him feel (powerful). He's desperately trying to keep his identity in the face of all this - with Hannibal's help, of course; Hannibal comes to be the one person he trusts completely. In turn, Hannibal is often the only one who seems to truly listen to Will and to have his best interests at heart. (Will: "I think something's wrong with my brain." Everyone: "That's silly. It's just your normal weirdness." Hannibal: "Okay, let's get a brain scan.")*

* Of course then he convinces the doctor to not tell Will he's got encephalitis, because it's so much more rewarding to study him, so. And oh, yeah, he's probably more interested in seeing what he can mold Will into than in actually keeping Will sane. But that's just details. It's for Will's own good. Really.

One of the great things about the show, is that so much of it is played completely straight - if you didn't know who Hannibal was because of meta, most of his behavior at the outset would be perfectly acceptable and normal. Even once it becomes more blatant, you still can't always tell to what extent he may be genuinely trying to help and to what extent he's playing games. (I'm not entirely convinced Hannibal knows, either.)

Here is the official trailer for the show, and here is Hannibal psychoanalyzing Will when they first meet.

OOC Notes:

The thing about Hannibal is that the whole "serial killer" bit? For the most part in no way invalidates the CV and what his friends think. He really does love fine art and fine food, he really is (apart from feeding them human, and in his own often idiosyncratic way) a good friend to people he's fond of, and he is quite suave and refined - his surface is deep enough to fool seasoned profilers he's close to, in part because it's not just surface.

He really does enjoy teaching, and does love imparting his knowledge and appreciation of the arts to others. He also may be prone to playing devil's advocate and being occasionally outrageous just to get them to think. And he may occasionally come off as creepy instead of reserved; he's fairly okay with that.

As far as the cannibalism thing goes - if Hannibal is feeding something to someone else, he may still joke, but you can assume it's not human. (Though hey, if you want it to be, feel free to ping me and maybe we can arrange something.) Similarly, if anyone tries to figure out what he's eating himself...well, it's likely at times it will be human, but never when anyone could prove it (again, if you want otherwise, please let me know).

Hannibal's not above a host of shady things - encouraging minors to drink magic mushroom tea, lying to get his way (though he prefers clever wordplay to actual lies), driving insane people more insane, etc. But he's very smart, and discreet, and has no intention of doing any of it at FH. (Or at least not anything that can't be passed off as innocent if anyone asks.) Then again, if you want to go a little crazy and need a collaborator, it's probably worth asking if he's up for it; he does have rather unique morals.

The player:

Hi there! Llwyden here. I live Cleveland-ish in Ohio, which is Eastern time. Between work and commute, I'm only likely to be truly, undividedly-attentioned online morning and night (after 8 or 9) on weekdays, though I do check e-mail throughout the day and will hopefully be able to make short posts from work.

I've been in fandom for...erm...way too long? (I thought I'd read and seen a ton of fandoms till I started looking over some of the other characters here; sheesh, y'all are diverse!) I prefer Marvel to DC, Star Wars to Star Trek, and LotR to just about any other fantasy.

I'm not terribly shy, but I am bad at introductions, so if you have any questions about me or Hannibal, just ask!
