With as much prep done as possible the day before, Hannibal...was still up plenty early, due to both inclination and all the food still left to cook. He believed in doing everything right, and he also believed that the host should not spend their entire party in the kitchen.

So, with Sparkle's help, by early afternoon everything was done and being kept warm or cold, only the final just-before-plating flourishes left, and he was relaxing with a nice glass of mulled wine, ready for the guests.

That required some thought. Except it's hard to make a decision without information.

"I've actually never had any of them," Kaylin admitted after a moment. "What do you think would be good?"

"If you've never had them, try them all and decide for yourself," Hannibal suggested. "I can pour you small glasses of each."

"Okay," Kaylin said. "If that's allowed - but then, it's your house and you're in charge and you're suggesting it so, it would kind of have to be, right?"

"It would," Hannibal agreed. He started pouring with the wine and encouraged her to drink as he poured the others. "After all, I would never do anything I wouldn't approve of."

She sipped gingerly at the wine. "This has... spices in it," she said with a tone of curiosity. "It's interesting. ... A lot better than the wine I've had in Elantra."

Which would probably have been not quite on par with a bad bargain wine around here. It's not like the bars she went to there were in the best area of the city.
