This was the most crowded Hannibal could recall being in quite some time. There were several children in the master bedroom, one of whom was apparently his, her other father in another bed in his room (yes, thank you, Angela, but they were not a couple here, and you could stop looking at them like that), and Jono's friends on the pull-out couch in the living room.

On the bright side, it was a built-in audience for breakfast. So Hannibal was brewing some excellent coffee while he worked as quietly as possible at cinnamon polenta pancakes, sweet potato & pork belly hash, rosemary grapefruit, thick-cut bacon, and toast from some very good, dense bread he had.

And mimosas for the adults. He had a feeling they still might need a drink.

It certainly did! And, better yet, she was 'Auntie Karla' not 'Mommy'! Hopefully that meant no new children for her this weekend. "Hello, darling," she said, wrapping her arms around the little girl and pulling her in close. "You look adorable today. Is your mommy and daddy here?"

She had gotten wise in the ways of finding out who random children belonged to over the years.

Kathe snuggled into Auntie Karla.

"Dad's over there," she said pointing vaguely in Jono's direction. "Mom's not here."

Mom was never around on these weekends. Weird.

Because Rosalind was clearly some kind of genius.

"I'm sure she'll turn up," Karla said, more to be reassuring than out of any idea whether or not that was true. For all she knew, the little girl's mother might not even be on the island. "Now, help me out here. I'm having a silly day. What's your name, sweetheart?"

"Do you need coffee?" Kathe asked, giggling. "Are you still sleepy? I'm Kathe, Auntie Karla."

The child had asked if she wanted coffee. She was keeping her forever and ever. Her children kept trying to steal her coffee.

"Ah, Kathe, I knew it!" Karla said, smacking herself on her forehead. "My very favoritest Kathe I know!"

That's because coffee was a gross adult drink, and Kathe didn't like it! Auntie Karla could have all of it, if she wanted.

"Only Kathe," she said hopefully. "Right?"

That, at least, was true.

"Only Kathe," Karla reassured her. "But even if I knew a millionty of them, you'd still be my very favoritest."

This wasn't endearing Kathe to Kayla any, but fortunately, she was involved with her Daddy at the moment.
