Most people who knew Hannibal would probably assume he overpacked out of sheer hedonism. But while he appreciated luxury...well, yes, likely more than the next person...he was perfectly capable of leaving it behind when appropriate.

Which didn't mean he wasn't packing his quality toiletries, but it did mean he was leaving the suits behind.

"Have you checked the weather forecast yet?" he asked, trying to decide on trousers.

//It's a tropical dinosaur island,// Jono replied, blinking. //My best guess is it's going to be 'hot, with a side of wet that will probably also be hot.'//

Jono was... worse at packing.

//Costa Rica weather this week is calling for thundershowers, at least. Some of that might end up carrying over, can't hurt to at least bring an umbrella and some waterproofed boots.//

Hannibal nodded. "Boots and a rain jacket," he agreed. "And yes, hot and humid, but there's warm and there's sweltering." He pulled out several pairs of cotton and linen.

//Either way, I'll probably be camped out wherever I can find air conditioning,// Jono mused. //This much leather is fairly unforgiving no matter what sort of 'hot' we're expecting.//

And while he'd been better about not hiding here on the island, there was noooo way in hell he'd be caught dead without a thick layer of leather wrappings between his flames and the teeming masses of tourists while they were on this trip.

Nor would Hannibal have expected him to. He squeezed Jono's shoulder in passing. "Have you considered something breathable, or does it not block the light sufficiently?"

//There've been some synthetic materials that have done the trick over the years,// Jono mused. //Most tended to come in the form of X-uniform, though. I've never been in any sort of hurry to pull those on again. Anything remotely porous tends to come out looking, er, backlit.//

Because it was.

//The swimgear you got me did a decent job, just so long as I wore it during the day and didn't go anywhere too shaded. That's about the best I've found outside of leathers and plastics thus far.//

"Can you get some of the material from Logan?" Hannibal asked. "We could get it to a tailor. It's probably too late for this week, but it might come in handy in future. Temporarily," he added, patting Jono's chest where a few more inches of skin grew than last year.

[furnaceface]

//Temporarily,// Jono agreed, ducking his head a little and leaning forward toward Hannibal's hand. //And mostly just for outings like these. I could certainly give it an attempt, at least. I can't imagine Logan would say no.//

Though Jono might get the side-eye for asking for help covering up at all, granted. Logan still owed him one for agreeing to teach part-time at his school in the first place.

Hannibal was all for Jono not covering up, but he was also for not causing problems with the locals. "We'll make you something lovely and comfortable. And for this week, we'll manage." He kissed Jono's temple.

[furnaceface]

//Lovely,// Jono echoed, amused, as he nuzzled right back.

Because when he thought of 'wrapping his face in something,' Jono didn't generally start by looking for 'lovely.' Comfortable would be a nice change of pace, though.

//We'll manage. I'm certain I'll be busy either attempting to find a block of ice to sit on or gaping at large reptiles, either way.//

Well, if they were going to look on it as a fashion choice, "lovely" was a good criterion. Or would "handsome" be better?

"More the latter than the former, with luck." Hannibal wrapped his arms around Jono. "At least you aren't prone to heat exhaustion, but please let me know if it becomes a problem regardless."

[furnaceface]

//Of course,// Jono murmured. //The heat won't take me down, but that doesn't make it any more enjoyable an experience, after all.//

He couldn't exactly sweat. Or re-hydrate. Or any of those fun things that generally helped when it came to coping with tropical weather.

//We'll have fun,// he decided, a moment later. //This'll be fun. It's basically a big amusement park... zoo... thing. Haven't done something quite like this in quite some time. And I imagine I'll appreciate the dinosaurs even more from the other side of a cage or wall or whatever.//

"Many things are easier to enjoy when they aren't attempting to kill you," Hannibal noted, amused. "Although they did make quite interesting steaks."

[furnaceface]

//There was that,// Jono agreed, nodding thoughtfully. //The ones I didn't reduce to charcoal on the way, at least. These ones are likely to be less crispy, too.//

Imagine that.

"Presumably," Hannibal agreed. "Although you should feel free to crisp any who attempt to kill us."

[furnaceface]

//If any attempt to kill us, I'll be forced to question whether or not the people who own this bloody place have any idea how the hell to run a zoo,// Jono mused, raising his eyebrows. //You would think 'dinosaurs in the cage, people outside of it' would be a simple enough concept.//

[sharp_as_knives]

"You would think that, yes." Hannibal gave him a wry smile. "Then again, this is Fandom we're visiting with."

[furnaceface]

//Now, now. Fandom vacations tend to go fairly well,// Jono chided. //It's usually later in the fall when we need to start looking out for mass chaos and things that go bump in the night.//

Like clockwork, really.

"Unless of course we bring our own oddities with us," Hannibal pointed out. "Although I did spend a lovely time in Malaysia, regardless of my gender at the time."

[furnaceface]

//Well, should we wake up as ladies again tomorrow, at the very least I won't have to worry about overheating in my wrappings,// Jono decided. //Barring that, this should hopefully go well.//

A pause.

//Knock on wood.//

If dinosaurs actually attacked, Jono only had himself to blame.

Hannibal's expression agreed. "We'll keep our eyes open."

[furnaceface]

//Good idea,// Jono agreed. //And stick close together. I'm not opposed to any dinosaur cookouts if it comes down to that, after all.//

Yeah. Yeah, he was already working out contingency plans for a glorified zoo visit gone awry. Because of course he was all paranoid, now.

And Hannibal always planned for every possible contingency, so...Yes, there were reasons they made such a good team.

He kissed Jono once more and went back to packing. "Will you be bringing a guitar?"

[furnaceface]

//Probably an acoustic,// Jono replied, nodding a little as he rummaged around for enough socks to get him through the week. //I'd go mad without something, and this is the first trip I'll have been on in a while that isn't terribly likely to have a music shop I can at least rent from while we're there.//

[sharp_as_knives]

"Sometimes I wish my own music were more portable." Hannibal chuckled. "Although I've grown quite adept at composing in my mind palace."

[furnaceface]

//Wouldn't mind joining you for one of those composing sessions if you'll have me,// Jono mused. //I imagine it'd be a little more versatile in there, having any instrument you have a familiarity with at your disposal.//

[sharp_as_knives]

"Of course," Hannibal said, smiling at him. "I look forward to it." He placed the carefully wrapped sunscreen in his suitcase and took Joni out of it. Again.

[furnaceface]

//You know,// Jono ventured, watching Hannibal extract the cat from the luggage, //one of these days, she's going to get into that thing, and we won't realize until we're already through the portal.//

A beat.

//Which'll be one hell of a feat, considering the whole 'dropping them off at the kennel first' thing.//

Never underestimate the tenacity of a determined forever-kitten.

"If there is a way, I've no doubt this little lady will find it." Hannibal gave her an exasperated look before putting her down.

Joni sat there for all of two seconds before licking a paw, and then winding around the nearest set of ankles. That would totally throw her people off her scent before the inevitable next attempt!

//She's a resourceful one,// Jono agreed, his smile quite apparent in the corners of his eyes. //And on certain trips, that might not even be a terrible thing. But if she gets eaten by a pteranodon or something while we're there, I'll be rather displeased.//

Understatement ahoy!

"I don't suppose you could explain that to her?" Hannibal asked. "Besides," he told Joni, "if you were to come with us, you'd be unable to bother Beethoven all week."

[furnaceface]

//I could explain it to her, but see if she listens. She is a cat,// Jono pointed out. //Still, I think she might actually be more in love with tormenting Beethoven than she is in getting into trouble elsewhere, so it might be worth the attempt...//

Joni wasn't exactly paying attention thus far, though.

[sharp_as_knives]

Because again, she was a cat.

"Well, we'll put him in the carrier first."

[furnaceface]

//It'll be the only hope we have of getting her into it without either of us bleeding too much,// Jono agreed, nodding. //Lord only knows what the difference is between being locked in the carrier and being shut into a packed suitcase, in the mind of a cat.//

Joni definitely preferred the suitcase. By a lot.

"One offers greater opportunity to shed on our clothing," Hannibal answered dryly.

[furnaceface]

//Simple pleasures,// Jono mused, and then made a reach to start sorting through his underwear.

Yes. Yes he was picking ones that would make Hannibal cringe the least. He was clearly in a good mood tonight.

Either that, or Hannibal had been doing an excellent job of curating his laundry.

Hannibal was an excellent curator, it's true. And prudent enough to hold his triumph down to a very slight smile.
