Thanksgiving Dinner

With as much prep done as possible the day before, Hannibal...was still up plenty early, due to both inclination and all the food still left to cook. He believed in doing everything right, and he also believed that the host should not spend their entire party in the kitchen.

So, with Sparkle's help, by early afternoon everything was done and being kept warm or cold, only the final just-before-plating flourishes left, and he was relaxing with a nice glass of mulled wine, ready for the guests.

"All of it, naturally," Hannibal answered, smiling. "But you might enjoy the mushrooms the most."

Some of Hannibal's favourite dishes were simply to die for, Jono.

"I never cook anything I wouldn't eat," Hannibal answered as he picked up a mushroom. "You can't ask me to choose a favorite, though; that would be like asking you which song was your favorite. They all have their appeal."

He held up the mushroom. "Crimini, with garlic and pancetta."

He knew some things about food. Ish.

You were going to learn even more about food, if Hannibal had a say, Jono!

For now, though, he bit delicately into the mushroom, savoring the flavors.

Jono couldn't even argue that there wasn't any point learning if he couldn't appreciate the food, these days. It figured, really, people were going to make his favourite pastime - complaining - more difficult by being bloody helpful all of the time.

//Right, so the difference in tas--oh.//

Jono didn't get to taste things like this very often at all. Sure, there was plenty of great food in Kaeleer, but at the end of the day, more often than not, Jono was far more inclined to go into hiding, rather than head into the dining room and use his powers to do something like taste.

Even taste got tiring, after using his powers all day. So today, this was quite the treat.

Hannibal was evil like that - he was just too helpful!

And also enjoyed the unrestrained appreciation Jono always showed to his food. He really was going to have to share his favorite dish some time.

Jono waited until the flavours faded before looking up at Hannibal again.

//You know, sometimes I think to myself, 'Maybe this time, I'll actually be able to sit through a tasting of one of Hannibal's dishes without stopping mid-sentence and looking like a complete arse,'// he shared. //And then I taste one of your dishes, and it reminds me just what a stupid thought that actually is.//

Hannibal chuckled. "I never mind; it's quite a compliment. What would you like to try next?"

Well, Jonothon wasn't going to worry about it too much if Hannibal took it as a compliment. At least his mindset wasn't down around the 'says the man who's been spitting fireworks for years on end' end of the spectrum whenever Jono had something good to say about the cooking.

"Fried potato," Hannibal confirmed. "Not greasy." Because that argument would never not be amusing.

He had no doubt it would be delicious.

"A chef's secret," Hannibal answered. "Passed down through many years."

Which he'd be happy to demonstrate by eating a bit.

Jono was silent for a few moments more, because he needed to find a chair an park his butt in it before his knees could give out. THAT WAS CHEATING. SMOKED SALMON WAS CHEATING. EVERYTHING ABOUT THAT FOOD WAS CHEATING.

//Hnn. No fair, mate. I don't know what you laced that with, but it's divine. And probably bloody addictive. Is it popular on the black market?//

Hannibal really was a rotten cheater. "Only the caviar," he answered equably.

Tempting as that was - and the glint in Hannibal's eyes probably gave that away - he held off as requested. "I should have expected it would be the fish and fried potatoes that would do you in."

Jono caught that glint, and met it with a wrinkled nose and a raised eyebrow.

//I am fairly predictable that way,// he agreed. //If you really want to finish me off with flavour, we can do this again sometime when I won't be worried about broadcasting inappropriate reactions to the room at large, hm?//

Hannibal smiled and finished the rest slowly, savoring the flavors. "Even though it isn't greasy?"

Jono closed his eyes, savouring the flavours along with Hannibal. It wasn't until he was finished that he spoke again.
