Hannibal's office, Saturday

At least staying at the hotel and meeting in his office meant that it was a short (and pleasant, if cold) walk to work, rather than a drive in Baltimore traffic. Which was especially welcome as his morning routine took a little longer as a woman.

Hannibal chased off the squirrels with a rum bribe and a forbidding look, turned the heat up to a comfortable range, and set out water, then sat at his desk to read a bit while he waited for Derek.

"So you don't blame her attacker, then?" Hannibal may have arched an eyebrow at that.

"You said that you're the one to blame. You don't blame the person who attacked her for her death?"

Which was why Derek was bust staring at his hands, much less bushy eyebrows bunched up in thought.

Hannibal was still very good at waiting. Although he was finding the temptation to tap his foot was greater with the extra bit of heel on these shoes.

He refrained.

Well, they were nice shoes...

"I was the one who ended it."

Congratulations, Derek, that was very nearly actually saying it!

"Would you have done that if she hadn't been attacked and dying?"

Nearly!

"No," Derek said, looking appalled.

"Then why not lay the blame where it's due?" Hannibal asked.

Oh, giving Derek things to think about. He was onto to you, Hannibal. Just, you know, not about the important things.

Like the cannibalism.

He looked down, exhaling as he thought it over.

Pfft. The cannibalism was completely irrelevant to your therapy, Derek; thinking about things was not.

"The person who attacked her chose to do so," Hannibal pointed out quietly, not wanting to interrupt his thinking. "That was never your decision to make."

No, no. They had Peter to blame for that. Shady mother fucker that he was.

"If I'd gotten there faster--" But he was always coming up short on the whole hero thing.

"Could you have?" Hannibal asked. "Were you moving less quickly than you were able? Did you hesitate to go?"

"No." Considering he flung himself at a giant alpha werewolf.

"Then you did what you could, yes?"
