Hannibal's house (which Jono makes free with), Sunday evening

Invitations had gone out handwavily on the school and town's bulletin boards, both electronic and physical, that a belated post-pollen relaxation and last-day-of-break dinner party was being held at Hannibal's house and everybody was invited.

Of course, that meant Hannibal had had to come home and go immediately into a frenzy of cooking and preparing, but honestly - you relax your way, and he'd relax his.

Dante didn't trust teachers even a little bit, not even ones he talked to on a fairly regular basis, like Hannibal. But it was evening by now, he was still bored, he'd gotten used to free food and free booze, and fuck, whatever.

He squinted at the door. Considered knocking it. Then just gave it a nudge.

"Huh."

Pretty sure he hadn't been overdoing the strength on that.

No, the door was actually open. Good thing, since Hannibal rather liked the structural integrity of his house.

Hannibal paused in setting out a plate and nodded to Dante. "Welcome. Please, help yourself. Would you like a drink?"

Yes, it was probably a silly question. But if Hannibal served it himself, it would keep Dante from running amok behind the bar.

Dante came from central Limbo City. Open front doors? Open front doors didn't exist.

He threw the door a mildly bewildered look as he stepped into the house. "Yeah, sure," he said, distracted. "Man, you really like giving out free food, don't you?"

"I enjoy cooking, and I enjoy watching people appreciate my food," Hannibal answered. He took out a glass and poured Dante a beer.

"Did you enjoy your vacation?"

Maybe if he'd been genuinely in a good mood, instead of trying to force it for most of the week, yeah.

'Course, Dante just shrugged his shoulder. "It was alright," he said, "At least I wasn't freezing my ass off."

He wandered over because hey, beer. "Didn't see you charging off to throw knives at the skeletons," he joked.

Hannibal shook his head. "I leave the heroics to Mr. Starsmore," he said. "Who also informs me that such things probably wouldn't have done much good. I did, however, procure a number of good cheeses."

Dante let out a snort, but kept his opinion on Mr. Starsmore to himself. At least for like, the next thirty seconds. "Y'know, those burning skeletons might've gotten bogged down if you threw cheese at 'em," he mused. "Sticky."

He picked up the beer like he was afraid it was going to get taken away, otherwise.

Hannibal laughed. "That would be a waste of good cheese. I suggested a bowling ball."

"You'd have to aim pretty good," Dante said, taking a swig from the bottle. "I could probably pull it off."

"I'll keep it in mind if we're invaded by skeletons," Hannibal promised. He sighed at Dante and pointedly moved the glass of beer in front of him. "Most of that is in here."

He took another swig from the bottle, just to make his point, before he actually grabbed the glass.

He wasn't going to bother trying to argue class with Dante. Again.

Honestly, at this point, it was probably at least 75% trolling, because Hannibal made it easy.

"Just means you have to get another bottle," Dante said, perky. "That's the whole point."

"Just one drink a person?" Dante asked, peering at the bar. "I thought you'd be better at parties."

"I'm definitely enjoying the three gulps from the bottle," Dante promised, looking kind of amused about the whole thing. "Cross my heart."

"I can't promise you shit, but I'm going in," Dante said, bringing the glass up to his mouth and taking a sip.

Truth be told, it should taste better in a proper glass. Not that Hannibal expected Dante to notice the difference. Or to admit it if he did. So he just watched with an expectant look on his face.

Which might have made Dante snicker if he didn't have a glass of beer in his face, go figure. He lowered it. "Still tastes like beer to me," he said. "But I'm sure there's like, science."

"There is," Hannibal agreed. "But as I'm not teaching that this semester, I'll forego it. Suffice it to say, it should go well with the food."
