Hannibal's house, Sunday morning

Jono had slept straight through the night - a miracle Hannibal was perfectly ready to take credit for. He wasn't likely to sleep much longer, though, so Hannibal was headed back upstairs with the simple omelette he'd made for breakfast and a good-sized carafe of coffee.

Jono shrugged into his jacket and took a moment to check his own pockets before nodding.

//Ready as I'm ever going to be,// he announced. //Shall we, then?//

It wasn't like he could help the whole 'skinnier and no-chested' thing. Not many people were as big as he'd been when he'd had Apocalypse's blood in his veins. That wasn't really how human bodies worked, generally.

They would work on the no-chested part. And Jono had plenty of workout equipment.

Hannibal headed downstairs and grabbed his bag on the way out. "It seems to be a lovely day, at least."

//Even the walk to the parking lot will be nice, then,// Jono decided. //Not a bad way to start a day, really.//

Okay, so he'd missed out on his morning workout, but all things considered, he'd earned a day off, there. Because of the aforementioned working on the no-chested part.

"Not at all." Hannibal gave him a wry look. "Although we may want to avoid any of our presently older compatriots."

[furnaceface]

//... Good plan. There's no telling how many more of them are going to want to throw boots at my head, either.//

What? He'd met himself. He knew that he was good at stirring up the ire of others when he least expected it.

"If you keep them on your feet, I imagine you'll be fine," Hannibal answered. And Sparkle hadn't warned him about anyone knowing his secrets, so hopefully they both would be. "But it never hurts to be careful."

[furnaceface]

//No, I suppose it doesn't,// Jono agreed, as it occurred to him why Hannibal might not necessarily want to bump into anybody else when 'twenty years from now' was such an unknown factor. //And if we do run into any trouble, we can just wait the rest of the weekend out on the mainland, I suppose. It'll be like a very short vacation.//

"Incredibly short, as I have class tomorrow morning," Hannibal said, smiling. He gave Jono a brief hug as they headed out. "We're headed to Tokyo."

//Long trek for some food,// Jono observed. //Thank goodness for portals. I'm still impressed they haven't given you any trouble, though.//

How? How did Hannibal manage to get where he was going without any mix-ups along the way? Jono was forever going to be in awe.

"Perhaps they're more careful with portals for the school," Hannibal suggested.

Or maybe they had some workers from a world where Silence of the Lambs was big who liked to gossip. One of those.

//I would be willing to buy that if they hadn't jumbled my own class portals up on an occasion or two,// Jono replied, shrugging. //Much as I enjoy authentic experiences, I hadn't actually meant to bring the students to an original showing of a Shakespeare production at The Globe.//

Smelly, mostly. And loud.

"That sounds quite interesting," Hannibal said. And smelly, loud, and likely hot, but interesting! "But you're suggesting I should book the portals for our class?"

//I'm just saying that if for whatever reason I end up having to do it, don't be surprised if we end up learning cave paintings from actual neanderthals.//

Which would also be a learning experience, but...

"We'll try to avoid anything prehistory," Hannibal agreed. He preferred people he could manipulate speak to.

//Honestly, I like to avoid time travel in general whenever I can manage it,// Jono admitted. //With a few exceptions here or there, I suppose.//

Mostly music-related ones. Of course.

"As do I. If for no other reason than the confusion. Besides," Hannibal said, smiling, "I enjoy more conventional travel."

//Hence the motorbikes,// Jono agreed, nodding toward the parking lot. //I'd have to agree, if I didn't enjoy flying so much more.//

And he missed it, too. Maybe instead of a bike and some home renovations, he should have started saving up for a helicopter or something.

Which... would have ended poorly.

"I'm assuming you don't mean traveling by plane," Hannibal said. "You said you had equipment that would let you fly?"

//A collar,// Jono agreed, reaching a hand up to gesture toward his throat. //Sort of needed vocal chords in order to make it work, though. I could probably rework it so that it runs using my own psionic power, but I don't know enough about psionic interfaces to be able to quite figure out how to control it mentally.//

And he was too stubborn to go pester Barry, though he had no doubt the boy could manage it.

"Why not use other sound?" Hannibal suggested. He secured the pack to his bike as he talked. "There are enough ways to generate it."

An iPod would probably work better than a turntable for that.

//It's a little more complex than that,// Jono replied, a touch wryly. //It'd be like asking a pilot why he can't use a drinking bird toy to fly a plane and why he thinks he needs his hands for the job. Reaction time is different, for a start. Vocalizations and subvocalizations and deep breaths and... There's practically an art to it. And the collar was always for more than just flying, anyway.//

Hannibal gave him an exasperated look. "You said the sound powered it; you hadn't mentioned the rest." He could probably learn to vibrate air with his flames, come to that, but it wasn't likely to be any easier than rebuilding himself, which would accomplish the same thing.

Then again, Hannibal had perfectly good vocal cords oh lord let's not even go there.

He sat on his bike. "You mentioned once that your existing power could be used to fly?"

[furnaceface]

//I mentioned that I had a friend who could copycat powers, who had used mine to be able to fly, yes,// Jono replied, shrugging a little. //But I still haven't been able to figure out how he did it. Trying what he said to try... mostly just wound up with a scorched bit of lawn.//

And Jono feeling like an idiot and never trying again. Details.

"And how long ago was the last time you tried?" Hannibal asked. He put on his helmet and started his bike.

[furnaceface]

"Years," Jono admitted, fastening his own helmet. //But in this particular case, I think it's more a matter of how we both vented our respective energies. His powers adapted them, didn't mimic them exactly, and so he could channel it through his hands for... a sort of lift, I suppose? Mine has already figured out how it wants to make its exit.//

The horrible way.
