Thanksgiving Dinner

With as much prep done as possible the day before, Hannibal...was still up plenty early, due to both inclination and all the food still left to cook. He believed in doing everything right, and he also believed that the host should not spend their entire party in the kitchen.

So, with Sparkle's help, by early afternoon everything was done and being kept warm or cold, only the final just-before-plating flourishes left, and he was relaxing with a nice glass of mulled wine, ready for the guests.

"I don't even know what bubblegum is," Kaylin admitted, "so it can't be as important as the rest of the stuff. So I guess we're good. If anyone asks us. Or we can just keep our mouths full. Some people are awfully picky about people who talk while they still have food in their mouths."

"Oh god, that's brilliant," Sparkle laughed, clapping his hands. "And it's not even a hardship, here. I mean, we all know what Hannibal's cooking tastes like, right? There is not a single person here who would blame us for just constantly having our mouths full."

It had been so, so hard to keep from just eating everything while helping Hannibal with dinner prep. Somehow, Sparkle had managed.

"Exactly," Kaylin said smugly. "We can eat all we want and if they ask us something just point to our mouths and shrug."

"I mean, at a dinner party like this, the last thing we'd want to be is rude, right?"

Really, the last thing you wanted to be around Hannibal was rude.

"Yeah, and Hannibal is really strict, so we'd want to be on our best behavior." She smiled at him. "We wouldn't want to upset him in his own house."

Sparkle couldn't help but laugh a little at that.

"Hannibal's not all that bad, once you get to know him," he shared. "I mean, so long as you're trying not to be offensive or anything, usually you're doing pretty okay. Hell, I broke into his house drunk once and the worst I got was a safe place to crash and he told me to just use the front door the next time around."

It probably helped that Hannibal had already been a mentor figure to Sparkle for a while by that point, granted.

"Yeah, he gave me detention once 'cause I was pretty much sleeping in his class - and I didn't really have a lot of respect for the music he liked. But once we talked, he really listened, you know?" Kaylin was very serious about this. It was only recently that she'd found people who'd listen. "And I still had to do detention, but now he feeds me a lot 'cause he thinks I don't eat right."

Or, you know, at all if she got distracted.

"And he's nice to me."

"Between you and me," Sparkle said, leaning forward conspiratorially, "I think he has a big soft spot for kids. Like, huge squishy spot. All you have to be is the right combination of young and messed up, and congratulations, Hannibal's probably going to listen and talk and try to feed you."

See? Except for some minor quibbles, Sparkle totally had Hannibal figured out!

Kaylin nodded. "I think you're right. Just sometimes it comes across as grumpiness when he thinks you're not doing things right. And sighs."

She did a decent imitation of Hannibal's long put upon look.

Sparkle cackled and applauded at that impression, yes. Well done!

"Half the food I like will get that face out of him," he shared. "Ever had a Pop Tart?"

"A Pop Tart?" She looked at him curiously. "No, I've never heard of that."

"Oh man, you have to. I'll hook you up sometime. They're these, like, pastry things full of jelly? Kind of. They're best when you heat them up in the toaster, but I never do, it's like an extra step."

Sparkle, stop feeding junk to the alternate reality kids.

"OKay," Kaylin said with a smile. "Do I get to try them both ways?"

"Sure," Sparkle replied, shrugging his shoulders easily. "They come in packets of two, so you can have one raw and the other one toasted. It's not like we don't have toasters in the common rooms, you know?"

"I'm not entirely sure what a toaster is," Kaylin admitted. "Is it like a microwave? I know how to use one of those. There's all sorts of machines here that I haven't figured out yet.

"Well, then you're talking to the right person," Sparkle chuckled, "because I am the toaster master. Have you seen the weird silvery box with the two long openings on the top on the common room counters, yet?"

"I have, yes," Kaylin said. "That is this toaster thing? What does it do?"

She was a bit in awe of the electrical things, but after getting a nice shock when she stuck her finger into one of the outlets to see what it was, she was more cautious around them.

"It, uh... it makes toast."

Hooboy, she really was from away, wasn't she?

"Tell you what... how about I take you into one of the common rooms one of these days and I'll give you a walk-through of what everything is and how everything works? The toaster's pretty easy. You just put slices of bread into it and push down the button on the side, and then walk away until the toast pops out. I wouldn't want you trying to play with, like, a blender or something, though. You'd lose a finger, or at least get puree all over the ceiling."

"But you said you put the popping things in it?" This was more confusing than she'd thought.

"Ohhhh! It pops things up. And it heats them like you would over a fire, yes? Oh, that's handy." She smiled at him. "Yes, I'd like that. You have all sorts of interesting things in this world. But I would prefer not to lose a finger. Or get sparked again. That wasn't fun."

"The Pop Tarts work kind of the same way as bread," Sparkle clarified with a nod. "You should probably really only put, like, bread products in the toaster, though. Pieces of meat or vegetables and things would just ruin it. But I can go over that with you while we're actually looking at a toaster, okay? Which..." He considered for a moment. "... I can't do over the weekend, I have plans, but pretty much any time besides, I'm free if you are."

Sparkle's totally riveting social life!

"I mean, I work two jobs, but pfft, I blow those off all the time."

... And Sparkle's sense of responsibility.

"That sounds good. But..." Kaylin hesitated. "You probably shouldn't miss work for me."

Be late, ridiculously late even, that was okay in Kaylin's book. Skip altogether? Not so much. See, she had standards!

There were worse standards to hold, really! Like Sparkle's.

"Sometime during the week then, maybe? Like, after classes are out. We can do a crash course of the kitchen and then eat whatever we put together. One less reason for Doctor Lecter to worry about whether nor not you're eating okay, right?"

Kaylin smiled and nodded. "I'd like that. I mostly have early classes and none at all on Thursday or Friday. And food is always good."

"I'm a pretty big fan of eating, too," said the kid who still smuggled dinner rolls away from school picnics in his backpack. "I have a class on Thursday and I work on Friday, but Thursday evenings are usually okay anyway, if that works? I can meet you in one of the common rooms and give you the walking tour of the kitchen."

Kaylin still did the same thing. When you grew up in the fiefs you took the opportunity to eat or take food whenever you could - except when she got too busy or forgot to eat.

"Thursday evening would be great," Kaylin said with a smile. "I'm on the second floor, but I'll meet you in whatever common room you want."
