Hanna's office in Baltimore, Sunday

After returning home and unpacking, then having a lovely dinner, a good night's sleep, and an equally good breakfast, Hanna was ready to get back to normal (for her) life. Which started with her Sunday patient.

She opened the office, set out water for Mr. Hale, and sat down to do some paperwork until he arrived.

"She was ripped in half," Derek replied, voice going dispassionate and cold to distance him from it. "And the person who did it was killing more people."

Hanna nodded. "And you wanted to stop them and avenge her."

Probably your most normal emotional response yet, Derek.

"He was killing people who helped in the fire. Laura was just--the catalyst for it."

Yes, this was perfectly normal.

"Do you have any family?"

[sharp_as_knives]

"My parents and sister died when I was young. I grew up in an orphanage until my uncle adopted me."

And she possibly killed all the people that killed her family, but that hadn't been established in her canon yet.

"Was he involved in the fire as well?"

[justlurkinghere]

"He was in the fire. My uncle."

[sharp_as_knives]

Hanna raised an eyebrow at that. "So he was killing those who had tried to kill him?" That was rational, at least. "Why kill your sister?"

"He tried to tell me he wasn't in his right mind," Derek said with a shrug.

[sharp_as_knives]

"But you don't believe him," Hanna noted. "Why do you think he did it?"

[justlurkinghere]

"He needed something from her."

Yes. Something.

[sharp_as_knives]

"And what was that?"

[justlurkinghere]

"It's kind of a long story," Derek replied dryly. "What's your opinion on the supernatural?"

[sharp_as_knives]

"Before I began teaching on the island, I would have said it was humankind's attempt to make sense of a nonsensical world."

She inclined her head. "Since then, I have had a ghost and a vampire for students, been briefly turned into both a werewolf and a vampire myself, and had another vampire for a friend. I would say I'm fairly accepting of it at this point."

"My sister had the ability to lead--" Or control. "--other of our kind. Change humans to be like us. She was faster and stronger too. My uncle needed to kill her to get that ability. To finish healing from the fire."

Hanna frowned. So many directions to go from there!

She thought for a moment, and decided to start with, "He felt his healing was more important than her life?"

[justlurkinghere]

"Apparently." And then Derek killed him for it.

[sharp_as_knives]

"Were you close to your uncle? Before or after the fire?"

[justlurkinghere]

"He was closer to Laura and my age than our mother's," Derek said with a shrug. "After the fire, he didn't wake up. His eyes were open, but nothing was there."

[sharp_as_knives]

"What changed?" Hanna asked. "He came back to himself?"

[justlurkinghere]

"I guess. He only contacted Laura to kill her."

[sharp_as_knives]

"Is this something you think he would have done before the fire, before his catatonia?" Hanna asked. "Or was he no longer the uncle you remembered?"

[justlurkinghere]

"The uncle I knew wasn't a murderer." But then, Derek was a terrible judge of character. "We're predators, we don't have to be killers."

[sharp_as_knives]

"What do you think changed?"

[justlurkinghere]

"It doesn't matter. He was dangerous," Derek said, baring his teeth unconsciously. "He needed to be stopped."

[sharp_as_knives]

"Because he killed your sister? Or do you object to the others he killed as well?" Hanna watched him. "Did you think he might kill others?"

Was this revenge, morality, or prevention, Derek?

[justlurkinghere]

Derek inhaled sharply, turning away to pace. "Because he killed Laura and because he tried to make me kill an idiot teenager and he wouldn't have stopped. He killed everyone involved in the fire and still went after innocent people."

Well. As innocent as an Argent could be.
